See what are the factors that determine the smile aesthetics

When I say that I chose the discipline of plastic surgery to perform my postgraduate course, I observe a questioning from the people. But why plastic surgery? What is the connection with orthodontics?

This may have been the right choice I made. I've always been very curious and the study of proportion and balance has always fascinated me. The notions of facial esthetics are fundamental for the performance of an orthodontics of excellence, since the patient's main complaint in 99% of cases is related to aesthetics and comes accompanied by questions such as: what should I do to make my smile stay A handsome smile has been the focus of attention in the sense of improving aesthetic appearance and self-esteem. Over time, it has been observed that successfully treated cases that meet the orthodontic criteria may not produce aesthetic smiles or facial aesthetics. This is largely due to the treatment plan adopted by the orthodontist who often believes that the aesthetics of the smile and facial aesthetics will be acquired as a natural consequence, once the best dental position is obtained according to the criteria of excellence in the orthodontics Aesthetics do not come from toast and I believe that the challenge these days is to give patients the best of both worlds: good function and good aesthetics.

Dentistry has been committed to improving materials and techniques that allow aesthetic ally , function and oral health. It is up to the orthodontist to play his role and carry out the treatment plan adopting concepts that until then were neglected and it is up to the patient to speak at the first consultation about the reason for his visit and what his expectations with the treatment.

Aesthetics and objective beauty

The word aesthetic has two dimensions: subjective and objective. Subjective beauty is a quality related to personal taste. It is more or less as Voltaire summed it up: "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder." This perception is influenced by cultural, racial and ethnic concepts and can vary widely. The Etruscans replaced missing teeth with animal teeth, the Mayan civilization used semiprecious stones in the smile, making it a sign of beauty, esteem and wealth.

Aesthetics do not come from toast and I believe the challenge these days is give patients the best of both worlds: good function and good aesthetics.

Objective beauty, on the other hand, is based on the consideration of the object itself. They are scientific and artistic principles that, taken collectively, can create a beautiful smile. These principles were established through patient records, diagnostic models, research, scientific measures and artistic concepts of beauty, which if considered and applied correctly, determine the ideal smile as the final result.

The ideal smile

To obtain the ideal smile, the orthodontist consciously, and the laymen unconsciously interpret the mouth as a stage and the teeth as the actors, where all have their role in oral harmony. The size, shape, position and color of the teeth are in harmony, proportion and symmetry relative to the framing elements, such as gingival soft tissues and lips. The perfect alignment of the dentition within the frame is just one of the requirements to have or create an ideal smile.

It is worth remembering that we almost always receive patients who come to the consultation with a model ready in the head, wishing a smile just like the artists of Hollywood. It does not fulfill this desire, because there is no universal ideal smile, which is for everyone, even because each person has a pattern that is proper and must be respected.Criteria for a beautiful smile

The most important aesthetic goal in orthodontics is to achieve a balanced smile that is in accordance with the patient's age, gender and facial type. When we observe only the smile, we can answer: how old is the person? Does it belong to the feminine or masculine gender? What is the facial type? I agree that we can, by looking, make a brief assessment. However, by means of objective principles, described below, we will have the scientific basis for this.

Age

To determine the age of the patient, we must observe the amount of exposure of the upper teeth. In a young smile, approximately 75% of the 100% of the upper teeth can be exposed. With aging, there is a significant decrease in the degree of exposure of the upper teeth, accompanied by an increase in exposure of the lower teeth. This progressive change is due to the effects of gravity on the position of the lips.

Sex

Regarding gender, women have higher exposure of the upper teeth than men at any age. The female teeth are smaller in size and have rounded corners, thus being more ovoid. Men already have larger teeth and more lively corners, which is why they are more square.

Face format

Several authors have tried to establish a relationship between the shape of the teeth and the shape of the face. People with long faces should have longer teeth and people with shorter faces should have shorter teeth.

Smile determines a first impression on the person and we often interpret the lack of harmony as unpleasant. Getting the ideal smile is within the reach of everyone, but for this to be possible the orthodontist chosen to handle the case must have a training in aesthetics to identify and choose the best position for each actor when the show begins.

Modeling surgeries help define body curves

Not always the exercise routine and one balanced diet are enough to shape your body the way you want it. For many people, the way is to resort to plastic. According to the plastic surgeon Fausto Bermeo, of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, the offices are usually crowded mainly in the summer, but the search for treatments and aesthetic procedures is high even in other seasons.
