See what diseases are associated with suppurative hidradenitis
Suppurative hidradenitis (HS) is an inflammatory skin disease characterized by recurrence of painful lesions. Several diseases have been associated with HS. Know what they are:
Arthritis causes pain and inflammation in the joints, usually aggravating with age. (1) It is estimated that 0.5 to 1% of the population suffers from the disease. (2) Arthritis associated with hidradenitis suppurativa is rare and most commonly affects the peripheral joints. Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that causes irritation in the digestive or gastrointestinal tract. It usually affects the last part of the small intestine (ileum) or the large intestine (colon), but can manifest in any zone, from the mouth to the anus. Over time, inflammation can cause lesions in some parts of the digestive tract, causing additional complications such as narrowing of the intestine. (4)
Several case reports and studies associate suppurative hidradenitis with Crohn's disease. In the largest of these, 38% of HS patients also had Crohn's. (5)
Suppurative hidradenitis has been shown to have a negative effect on the quality of life of those affected. Evidence suggests that patients with suppurative hidradenitis may also suffer from depression. Depression is a clinical condition that causes a constant feeling of sadness, disinterest and discouragement. The severity of the symptoms can vary from person to person. (6,7)
Studies suggest that people suffering from supraventricular hidradenitis have a higher risk of cancer compared to the general population. Among the most common cancers are skin, mouth and liver cancers. (8)
The characteristics of severe acne include, above all, deep solid nodules, inflammation and extensive skin lesions. The affected areas can become infected, causing a situation that, if left untreated, can cause scarring. (9)
Severe acne is associated with suppurative hidradenitis, although there is a possibility of an incorrect diagnosis of acne in people affected by HS. (8)
If you suspect that you may suffer from suppurative hidradenitis, in addition to any of these associated diseases, ask your doctor to refer you to a specialist.
