Smoking aggravates the risks of cerebral aneurysm

Smoking increases the risk of potentially fatal bleeding caused by an aneurysm, a new study says. Aneurysm is a lump or swelling that occurs in a blood vessel when your wall is weakened. The chance of surviving a ruptured aneurysm is 50%, with most survivors often carrying sequelae for the rest of their lives. The finding was published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry .

For the research, a specialist at Seoul National University Hospital in South Korea and colleagues compared 426 people who had suffered cerebral haemorrhage between 2002 and 2004 with 426 who had not had the problem. The mean age of the volunteers was 50 years. The group affected by cerebral hemorrhage had more adepts of smoking than individuals from families with a history of stroke or high blood pressure than the other group. About 38% of the bleeding victims were smokers, while only 24% of the volunteers in the second group smoked. After taking into account participants' weight, salt intake and family history of diabetes, the researchers concluded that smokers had a nearly three times greater risk of bleeding than non-smokers. Cigarette smoking time and number of cigarettes also influence risk.

Five years after quitting smoking, however, the risk of bleeding from an aneurysm rupture was the same as that of nonsmokers. The same does not happen with who smokes 20 cigarettes or more per day. In this case, the risk of bleeding remained twice as high even after cutting out the bad habit.
