Throat pain: incidence decreases in patients without tonsils

Throat pain: incidence decreases in patients without tonsils

Sore throat pictures may occur in people who have had surgery for the removal of the tonsils, since the procedure greatly decreases the likelihood of bacterial infections, but does not affect the likelihood of viral infections.

When we talk about tonsils, we are referring to the palatine tonsils, so called because they are close to the palate. The palatine tonsils are defense organs that are part of a structure called Waldeyer's ring. It surrounds the fundus of the throat (pharynx) and also includes the adenoid (located at the bottom of the nose, above the throat, visible only with instruments), peritubial tonsils (inside the nose, near the adenoid) and lingual tonsils which lie at the base of the tongue, near the tonsils). Waldeyer's ring protects us from viruses and bacteria that enter our body through the air and through food.

All these structures can be the target of infections. Viral infections usually cause inflammation of the throat wall (pharyngitis) and palatine tonsils. The bacterial origin leads mainly to the infection of palatine tonsils.

Studies show that in the general population 75% of sore throats are related to viral infections and 25% are related to bacterial infections. However, the incidence of bacterial infections in people who underwent surgery is greatly reduced, as these affect the palatine tonsils.

It is interesting to note that although tonsils are part of the immune system, several studies show that there is no significant ability to defend the body after surgery for removal of the tonsils. As for the treatment of viral cases, the recommendations are the same for all patients: it includes analgesics, antipyretics, light diet, abundant hydration and rest.
