Lingual piercings not only offer hazards such as chipped and fractured teeth, gum disease, periodontal disease and speech problems, swallowing and chewing, but can also harbor oral biofilm - increasing the risks of infection.

Researchers in Austria studied 85 people with lingual piercings. After examining the participants' oral health, they randomly distributed sterile piercings made of four different materials: stainless steel, titanium and two types of plastic. Participants were re-examined after two weeks.
