Study proves: feeling hungry really makes you moody

Someone has said that you get very grumpy when are you hungry? What was just an impression has now been proven by science. Researchers at Cambridge University have discovered that this actually happens because of instability in the levels of serotonin, a hormone linked to our behavior, which occurs when we feel hungry or stressed.

This change ends up reaching areas of the brain that allow us to control that feeling of rage, according to a study published in the scientific journal Biological Psychiatry. "We have known for decades that serotonin plays a key role in aggressiveness, but only recently have we had the technology to examine the brain and study how serotonin helps us regulate our emotional impulses," said researcher Molly Crockett of the Institute of Neurosciences Clinical and Behavioral Cambridge

For the study, healthy volunteers had their diet controlled, with the goal of manipulating serotonin levels. In parallel, the participants' brains were scanned while they observed faces with expressions of anger, sadness and neutrality, thus determining how the parts of the brain reacted and communicated with one another.

It was thus found that the low level of serotonin has affected and weakened communication between brain areas. Scientists say these flaws cause the brain to have difficulty controlling emotional responses to anger. The volunteers also answered a questionnaire that assessed whether they already had a tendency toward aggressiveness naturally. As a result, the researchers observed that people with this predisposition had even weaker communication between these regions of the brain when serotonin levels were low.

? We are hopeful that our research could lead to better diagnoses as well as better treatments for these and other conditions, "said Luca Passamonti, who served on the research as a visiting scientist at the Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit of the National Council for Medical Research in Cambridge.

When is it better to do home care or leave the elderly in a nursing home?

The decision to keep an elderly person in the home environment or in a nursing home still generates many doubts and anxieties in the families, because the theme is permeated by issues of values such as feelings of guilt, abandonment, and the difficulty of choosing the right place. When the elderly are able to decide on their own life, it is up to them to choose the best alternative for care.
