Study Connects Alcoholic Beverages and Unprotected Sex

A survey conducted by the University of Medicine of Cincinnati found a strong link between alcohol and unprotected sex among women. The study analyzed 287 young women, who participated anonymously, about their sexual intercourse in the last 30 days.

Data show that just over two-thirds (66.9%) of these women had unprotected sex after ingestion of alcoholic beverages. According to the study, published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine, participants felt more confident after ingesting large amounts of alcohol, but their cognitive functions were affected.

For Jennifer Brown, at the head of the research, it is important to understand this dangerous and extremely important relationship to public health. "Most young women reported levels of excessive pre-sex alcohol consumption, which may impair their cognitive functioning and decision making. These results underscore the need to analyze the associations between alcohol consumption and risky sexual behaviors" , explains Brown.
