Study shows that stress in childhood increases cell aging

A survey published by the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, found the impact that cells undergo stress during childhood, accelerating their aging.

In this research, scholars , analyzed the length of the telomeres (DNA structure responsible for chromosome protection) of 4,598 people, men and women over 50 years of age, between 1992 and 2008 who responded to traumatic events throughout their lives. The participants reported through questionnaires whether they faced stressful situations during the youth such as sexual assault, financial problems, alcoholism or family chemistry or problems with the police. Adult age factors such as unemployment and having health insurance were also analyzed. In addition, the loss or serious illness of a child or spouse, war injuries and a natural disaster was included.

Thus, the team of researchers found that the reduction of telomeres after 50 years increased by 11% for each traumatic experience as a child, with greater negative health effects than traumas experienced after adults.

Of the total number of participants, more than 75% reported at least one traumatic experience, and more than half, two or more situations. According to the researchers, this study reinforces previous research that child stress can increase cellular aging later.

Bariatric surgery indicated for each patient

Like any treatment, bariatric and metabolic surgeries are individualized, depending on several factors, including age, number and severity of associated diseases. Recalling what we have discussed in previous articles, bariatric operations are different from metabolic ones. The latter is indicated for the control of type 2 diabetes and other associated diseases such as hypertension and hyperlipidemia (problems with cholesterol and triglycerides), initially through mechanisms that do not depend on weight loss.
