Study suggests link between absence of teeth and chronic kidney disease

Adults who do not have teeth may be more likely to suffer from chronic kidney disease than those who still have them, according to a study recently published in the Journal The study, conducted at Case Western Reserve University, examined renal function and periodontal health indicators in 4,053 US adults aged 40 years or over. After adjusting risk factors for chronic kidney disease such as age, ethnicity, and tobacco use, the study showed that participants who had lost all teeth were more likely to have chronic kidney disease than patients who had preserved natural teeth .

The survey included more than 400 elementary school girls with an average age of 14 years. They were recruited from four public schools and four private schools in the Austin, Texas area. Students were assessed for identification of eating disorders and the risk factors involved, such as sociocultural pressure to be thin, dissatisfaction with body, dietary practices, negative affectivity and depressive symptoms.
