SUS incorporates medication to treat epilepsy in patients with microcephaly

The antiepileptic drug levetiracetam has been incorporated into the Unified Health System (SUS) for the treatment of patients with microcephaly.

The drug, also known by its trade name Keppra, helps control seizures in patients with anomalies due to infection with the zika virus.

According to the Ministry of Health, the maximum deadline for the incorporation of SUS is 180 days from the date of publication of the incorporation.

In addition, Keppra will be incorporated for SUS patients with a diagnosis of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy ( EMJ) for people resistant to monotherapy. Microcephaly is a rare neurological condition in which the child's head and brain are significantly smaller than those of the same age and sex. Microcephaly is usually diagnosed early in life and is a result of the brain not growing enough during pregnancy or after birth.

Children with microcephaly have developmental problems. There is no definitive cure for microcephaly, but treatments performed since the early years improve development and quality of life. Microcephaly can be caused by a number of genetic or environmental problems.

To this end, the scientists asked permission from relatives of terminal patients to perform an invasive neural monitoring. All of them had suffered traffic accidents, strokes, or cardiac arrest, and they had no way of being saved. What happens anyway? Scientists realize that as death comes, neurons have difficulty keeping their ions (or synapses) between them.
