Symptoms of gastritis include loss of appetite, hiccups and darkened stools

Gastritis is an inflammation, irritation or erosion of the lining of the stomach. It can occur punctually (acute) or repeatedly (chronic).

To help in the digestion of food and help kill external agents such as germs and bacteria, the stomach produces gastric juice, which is an acid. This acid is corrosive so the stomach cells produce a natural barrier to protect the stomach mucosa and the superficial layer of the small intestine, the duodenum. In general, there is a balance between the amount of acid and the mucosal defense barrier. When there is an imbalance and the acid produced by the stomach begins to attack the walls of the organ, the picture of gastritis begins.

Symptoms of gastritis

Symptoms of gastritis may vary from person to person. So in some cases they do not manifest at first, and may appear if there is a worsening of the condition. However, the most common symptoms of gastritis are:

  • Recurring stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Vomiting
  • Indigestion
  • Burning or stomach upset sensation between meals and in nighttime
  • Hiccups
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting with blood or dark brown color
  • Darkened stools

Causes of gastritis

Gastritis can be caused by irritation due to excessive use of alcohol, chronic vomiting, stress, or the use of certain medications such as aspirin or other anti-inflammatories. In addition, there are other factors that can cause gastritis:

Infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)

It happens when this bacterium is lodged in the mucosal lining of the stomach. If the appropriate treatment is not done, the infection can lead to ulcers, and in some people, even stomach cancer.

Gastroesophageal reflux

Bile is a liquid produced by the liver to aid in the digestion of food, especially the most greasy ones. After the food is digested in the stomach it goes into the small intestine, this passage is made with the aid of bile. Reflux occurs when the bile returns to the stomach after it has gone into the small intestine.

Anti-inflammatory medicines - including aspirin

Some medicines can affect the protective barrier of the stomach causing the acid to injure the region. Some of the most common are acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), ibuprofen, and diclofenac.

Emotional Factors

The exact relationship between emotional factors and gastritis is unknown. However, it may be related to decreased blood flow to the stomach.

Autoimmune factor

Gastritis can be caused by an autoimmune reaction - when the immune system mistakenly attacks the cells themselves and body tissues (in this case, the lining of the stomach). Although uncommon, this can happen if the person already has another autoimmune condition, such as Hashimoto's thyroid disease or type 1 diabetes.

According to Ira Driscoll, a professor of psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and lead author of the study , the result is exciting because caffeine is also an easily modifiable dietary factor with few contraindications. "Although we can not make a direct link between higher caffeine intake and lower incidence of cognitive impairment and dementia, with a more in-depth study, we can better quantify its relationship to cognitive health outcomes," said the teacher.

Guevoces: meet the girls who become boys at age 12

In 2015 the existence of the so-called Guevedoces, children of the Dominican Republic classified as female at birth and at 12 years of age with the appearance of the penis were recognized as being male.
