Tang suffers fine for including false information on the label

Mondelez Brasil Lda., Owner of the Tang brand, by the National Secretariat of the Consumer (Senacom) for bringing the information "without artificial colors" in the soft drink packaging. According to the agency, this could lead the consumer to error and, therefore, the company was fined more than 270 thousand euros.

The fine was applied in early July 2017, but the issue began in 2012 , based on a request from the National Sanitary Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) for Senacon. The manufacturer resorted and claimed to work with natural dyes, however, it was decided that the term "no artificial dyes" could not be used, since there are no specific criteria defined for the use of the term.

In a technical note, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security further stated that in the composition of the soft drink were used inorganic dyes and caramel dye, which did not are considered natural ingredients. Therefore, the information contained on the packaging could mislead the consumer as to the nature of the product.

The manufacturer stated: "Mondelez International, owner of the Tang brand, reserves the right not to comment on ongoing proceedings. The company clarifies that it fully respects the current national legislation and CONAR's rules on the advertising of its products, as well as reaffirms its commitment to transparency and respect for the consumer. "
