Understand the difference between depression and sadness

The disease of the century is often confused with a feeling of sadness, and understanding the differences is fundamental for early diagnosis.

Is it just sadness?

Sadness is a momentary feeling, considered healthy and even important by doctors. It helps in the elaboration of losses, or occasional sufferings. Those affected by the occurrence of losses, employment or loved ones, go through a phase of suffering and distress, which can last for a certain period of time (about 2 months), but this situation is gradually diminishing life

Now, if sadness does not pass, and feelings of apathy, indifference, hopelessness, lack of perspective or pleasure in life begin to emerge, know that this is a clear symptom of depression. The symptoms may appear or disappear in a subtle and almost imperceptible way, but it is important to know that they can return. Depression is a serious illness and should therefore be treated.

The risks of depression:

First, depression is not a state of deep sadness or discouragement, laziness, stress or bad mood. Depression as a psychiatric event is something quite different: it is a disease like any other that requires treatment. Even so, we can consider depression as a natural transition period. In order to better understand this diversity of depressive symptoms, let us consider that among people, depression would be like a general drunkenness, where every drunken person would have a way: cheerful ones, others sad, angry, funny, sleepy, libertines ... The only thing everyone would have in common is that they were under the influence of alcohol, everyone would be dizzy, their reflexes diminished, etc. In depression too. Each personality will manifest itself in a way.

Actually, nobody knows what a depressed person feels, just himself and maybe who has gone through it. Neither does the psychiatrist know: he recognizes the symptoms and knows how to treat them, but this does not make him aware of his patient's feelings and suffering.

May be mild, moderate or severe

Depression is classified in Affective Diseases Group, that is, those that have a cyclical evolution, alternating depressive periods with phases of absolute sanity. Contrary to popular belief, this is not a modern disease. Hippocrates, considered the father of medicine, described six mental illnesses, among them depression, about 400 BC.

The symptoms may manifest in a mild form, and it is common for the patient to seek a general practitioner believing lack of vitamins or some more serious illness. Others simply believe it to be just another "bad phase" and do not seek help, further aggravating the problem.

What is depression

When we talk about sadness, we need to define the topics that distinguish this feeling from depression.

- Sadness is a feeling intrinsic to the human being. All people are subject to sorrow. It is the absence of personal satisfaction when the individual is faced with their fragility.

- Depression is anger and vengeance digested in the person. In practice, it is an attempt to give back to others, which is worse in itself.

- Sadness does not reach the limits mentioned in the depressive situation. On the contrary, it is a valuable tool for assessing life goals. In childhood, the way to face sadness will be definitive to establish the adult personality.

"Sadness is refusal. The difficulty in accepting the "no" becomes demotivating and undermines self-esteem. On the other hand, rejection and disability in the face of some obstacles leads to deeper and deeper pictures of sadness.

Now that you know about the difference in sadness and depression, avoid labeling or even self-deprecating with minor everyday.
