Varicose veins are common in pregnancy and require special care

In pregnancy, approximately 70% of women have some type of varicose manifestation. Women who have a lot of family tendencies in pregnancy may have varicose veins triggered during this period. The good news is that a lot of them will go away spontaneously after the breastfeeding period.

The hormonal factor is undoubtedly the most important for triggering varicose veins. Therefore, in the first few months we have already noticed the appearance of small vessels or the enlargement of existing veins. The female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, relax the muscles of the vein, facilitating the formation of varicose veins and edema. Already from the third trimester, the increase of the volume of the uterus makes difficult the return of the blood by compression of the vena cava, that is the main vein of venous return to the heart.

Recommendations for preventing varicose veins and their complications during pregnancy:

  • No smoking
  • Maintaining body weight under strict control
  • Practicing regular physical activity , consistent with the period, including aerobic exercise to help weight control
  • Avoid standing in the same position for long periods, whether standing or sitting. Seek to move around every hour. Staying on tiptoe and doing repeated movements also helps in blood circulation
  • Whenever possible, lie down and place your feet high above the heart, preferably several times a day and at night
  • From the third trimester , sleep on the left side to facilitate venous return
  • Use medicinal elastic stockings whenever there is feeling of heaviness, tiredness or swelling

Medications may be prescribed exceptionally, being reserved for very symptomatic patients and preferably in the final trimester.

If you notice pain, localized heat, redness, or swelling (swelling) in one leg, it is good to seek help from an angiologist to rule out major problems.

Pregnancy is a unique time and especially in women's lives. Preserving vascular health with simple measures helps a lot the pregnant woman and her baby that is still arriving.
