Vitamin supplements help prevent cancer in men

Vitamin supplements help prevent cancer in men

Taking a multivitamin daily for years may lower the risk of cancer, according to new research from Harvard Medical School . The results were published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association . The study followed nearly 15,000 middle-aged men who were divided into two groups: half took a daily multivitamin supplement and the other half received the placebo. Health behaviors that could affect cancer risk, such as smoking and exercise, were divided equally between the groups. After 11 years, the vitamin group showed 1290 cases of cancer. In the placebo group, there were 1379 cases. About half of the tumors in each group were of the prostate. Analyzing the results, the scientists observed an 8% reduction in the risk of cancer in general by the men who took the supplements. When prostate cancer cases were removed from the account, there was a 12% reduction in the incidence of all other types of cancer. It is not yet clear, however, whether the findings apply to younger women or men.

According to the researchers, multivitamins are effective in preventing food-related diseases and the more nutrients provided by supplements help the body to fight free radicals more effectively. They warn, however, that supplementation should never replace healthy eating, rich in fruits and vegetables and always requires medical advice.

Take five steps to prevent various cancers

Cancer happens mainly because of increased exposure risk factors such as cigarette smoking, poor diet and alcohol abuse. Those who follow a healthier life can prevent and reduce the risk of having the disease. To stimulate the population in the fight for control and prevention, the Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo (Icesp) has launched a booklet listing the steps that drive the disease:

Say no to alcohol and cigarette

The cigarette carries about 4720 substances, of which more than 400 are highly carcinogenic. The most common cancers related to tobacco are lung, larynx, mouth, liver cancer and leukemia, bronchial and bladder. The oncologist Gilberto de Castro Jr., from the Institute of Cancer of the State of São Paulo (Icesp), explains that alcohol increases the risk of tumors located in organs affected by smoking by potentiating the effects of smoking.

Use a condom

The human papillomavirus (HPV) - sexually transmitted disease - is primarily responsible for some types of cancer, such as cervical cancer, vulva, penis and oropharynx (throat). Therefore, it is very important to practice safe sex and always with the use of condoms - even for oral sex.

Invest in a healthy diet

Avoid excessive consumption of sugars, fats, red meat, pork and processed. Invest in a diet rich in fruits and vegetables that are sources of fiber and antioxidants and protect the bowel from cancer.

Avoid consumption of foods high in sodium and preservatives

Processed foods are rich in one substance called nitrosamine, which is carcinogenic. Therefore, nutritionologist Roberto Navarro recalls, it is important that this type of food is avoided to the maximum.

Take an annual checkup

There are a series of tests that are fundamental to detect the different types of cancers . Among them, Gilberto de Castro Jr. recalls mammography, which must be done from the age of 50 to detect breast cancer or the collection of PSA - a blood test that can diagnose prostate cancer.

Study confirms efficacy of new vaccine for pneumonia in the elderly

The survey involved 84,496 participants aged over 65, recruited in more than 160 places of study. Part of the group took one dose of the vaccine and the remainder received placebo. Fifty-nine sentinel hospitals integrated the surveillance network to investigate cases of pneumococcal pneumonia. For the study, the elderly were separated into two groups: one received the vaccine and the other a placebo.

Hormone replacement prevents side effects after thyroid surgery

Hormone replacement prevents side effects after thyroid surgery

Regardless of the cause that has led to the surgical removal of the thyroid gland (thyroidectomy), the result will be the lack of its hormones, that is, hypothyroidism. The human body needs thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) to work properly, as they are responsible, among other things, for the increased speed of chemical reactions.
