Using expired makeup can do a lot of harm to your health

A lipstick of every color, base, powder and shade of the most infinite shades. Even if you wear makeup every day, if you are not a professional make-up artist, you will hardly be able to do away with all your products before their expiration date expires. "For many women, make-up has great durability. Products used after expiration can bring skin irritation with massive damage and slow treatment," says dermatologist Cesar Cuono, of São Paulo.

A survey conducted by the College of Optometrists at Britain, revealed that nine out of ten women wear makeup expired. Two-thirds of the respondents, of varying age groups, admitted to using the same cosmetics for more than two years. Women between the ages of 30 and 40 are the champions, as they do not renew their stock because they are attached to certain types of cosmetics that have usually gone out of print.

In Brazil, according to the National Agency of Sanitary Surveillance (Anvisa), 24 months is just the average life of a closed product. After opening, according to the entity, the tolerable duration of the goods should not be as long as six months.

The rules of the body determine that the date should be printed on the packaging. The problem is that most companies, unfortunately, do not yet have validity on the bottle, only on the carton or plastic seal that is thrown away as soon as the product is opened. "The validity period means that the company is responsible for the product within that period. It does not mean that after the date marked on the packaging, the cosmetic has been damaged," explains Vânia Leite, professor of cosmetic technology at Anhembi Morumbi University and Vitaderm's product development manager.

But finding that a makeup needs to go straight into the trash is not so difficult. "The products change color and smell, as a sign that the raw material has spoiled. Rancid viscosity is also a sign," says Marilda Tonetto, Pharmacist responsible for Akakia Cosmetics.

Dermatologist Meire Brasil Parada Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), complements: "If you notice any change, however minor, in the product or in you, it is reason to discard it immediately."
