WHO urges films with smokers to be classified as

The World Health Organization is calling on governments around the world to begin classifying films with smoking scenes as "adult." According to the WHO, films in which smoking is shown may influence millions of young people to start smoking. "With ever stricter restrictions on cigarette advertisements, movies remain the last channel to expose millions of teenagers to images of unrestricted smokers," said Douglas Bettcher, director of the WHO Noncommunicable Diseases Prevention Department. > WHO relies on American studies that show that in the United States, 37% of young American smokers were influenced by smoking in theaters. In 2014, the country says there were 6 million new smokers influenced by movies, and at least 2 million of them died from tobacco-related illnesses.

The measures requested by the WHO are:

Require mandatory age rating in films with smoke images, to reduce exposure of young people to smoking in films

  • Certify in the credits of the films that the producers did not receive anything of any value from anyone in exchange for using or showing tobacco products in their films
  • Stop of show cigarette marks on films
  • Require anti-cigarette advertisements to be shown before films with smoking images on all media.
