WHO launches strategic plan to combat Zika virus

The updated strategic response plan against the World Health Organization (WHO) Zika virus will need $ 121.9 million to implement actions against the disease this July to December 2017. According to the Ministry of Health, up to May, 83,000 cases of the disease and more than 1,500 infants with microcephaly and neurological alterations were registered in Brazil, most of them caused by the Zika virus.

Published on Friday (17), the document prioritizes the prevention and care of complications caused by the Zika virus and also expand the capacity of health systems for this. The plan underscores that the disease has long-term consequences for families and communities.

For the first half of the year, WHO had requested donations from member countries in the amount of $ 25 million, but only achieved RS $ 4 million. The plan is a guide for the more than 60 partners involved in the overall response to Zika being able to act in a coordinated way to reduce the effects of the disease.

Among the highlights cited as reasons for the need for a specific fund, WHO places potential spread of the virus due to the wide distribution of the vector, lack of population immunity, lack of vaccines and inequality in access to basic sanitation.
