With cancer never seen in the world, 3-year-old boy and family ask for help for treatment

a shared video on social networks, João Monjardim, three years old, shows all his courage when walking with his bike without the help of the side wheels (see here). Astute he even ventures some maneuvers with the toy.

This is just one of the demonstrations that John gives of his courage. His greatest test of valor is the fight that he battles daily against cancer. However, his case is especially complex: John has a cancer never before known by science and extremely aggressive. The family, who lives in Vitória, Espírito Santo, received news of the diagnosis in June 2016, when the tumor was discovered in the child's brain.

Renato Fabris, doctor and father of João, says that his son's illness is very aggressive because of its extremely rapid evolution compared to other cancers and because of the characteristics of the tumor cells. "The more the tumor cells look like normal cells, the more cancer is considered what we call 'differentiated,' which makes it a faster case to be treated." In John's case, cells are very distant of the characteristics of the normal cell, making the tumor 'undifferentiated', which shows that it is a very difficult case to deal with. lottery than having a tumor of that, "explains Fabris.

Unknown diagnosis

It all started when the boy's parents and grandmother noticed that he was getting tired and with frequent nausea. John underwent several tests, but nothing was detected. Until one day, his grandmother discovered that he had headaches and the doctors did a MRI. Thus, the cancer was identified.

Surgery to remove the tumor was done urgently and, during the analysis of the material, doctors realized that there were no records of this type of cancer, extremely malignant and aggressive. "It was then that the treatment was started and he received the strongest medications there are," said grandmother Solange Monjardim, "three cycles of chemotherapy and an autologous marrow transplant."

In this procedure, the patient's marrow is collected and, after treatment, he receives the marrow back. This method erases the entire immune system of the child, causing it to run out of immunity as a newborn. After 6 months the vaccination process is started again, so that the immunity of the patient is reconstructed. The recovery period may reach one year.

"We consider October 10 as the rebirth of John, when he received the marrow back," says the grandmother. After this period, he underwent radiotherapy and, after 33 sessions under general anesthesia, the family hoped that the treatment would be terminated. The last radio was on Jan. 9.

Metastasis and personalized treatment

However, early in February, in a routine appointment, physicians identified the cancer metastasis in John's marrow.

In this way, a completely new and unprecedented planning of treatment was realized, specially thought for the case of John by an American doctor. "The specialist has indicated three to six cycles of chemotherapy directly in John's marrow to decrease metastasis. He has had two seizures since the beginning of this new phase of treatment," reports Solange.

, when there is a sign of improvement in the picture, John should go straight to San Diego, United States, to begin the 33 sessions of protonotherapy, a method similar to radiotherapy, more efficient and less aggressive. Finally, John will undergo a treatment for the production of antibodies. There is no protocol to follow since John is the first case with this type of cancer, but doctors bet on this treatment so that the child can recover from the disease in the best possible way.

Collective financing

Treatment is long, complex and requires high financial investment. As a way of publicizing the child's case and asking for help in carrying out the treatment, the family created a Facebook page called Save John. Through the social network, family members also make frequent updates on the child's health status. an estimate, the boy's parents believe that the whole treatment outside Brazil should cost around 300 thousand dollars - more than 900 thousand reais.

Even in the delicate situation, João does not lose his good humor and in the videos captured by his family he appears smiling and affectionate with those around him. "He is a very happy child, he does not complain. He lives well because we adapt him to this reality, so today he knows he has a 'house in São Paulo', knows he needs to go to the hospital, that he has a device under his skin to get the medication. He lives life, "says his father.

Example of this is a video made at the hospital, where the parents show the little man doing maneuvers and having fun with his toy plane (see here). The crowd that is left is so that John can still lift many flights in his life.
