Women With Restless Legs Are More Prone To Hypertension

Middle-aged women with Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) are at higher risk of developing hypertension, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. This syndrome affects about 15% of the adult world population and is characterized by an intensely unpleasant sensation and an irresistible urge to move the legs. In 2005, researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, both in the United States, consulted 97,642 women about their symptoms of RLS and condition of blood pressure. The mean age of these women was 50.4 years. Among the specific questions were questions about unusual tingling or pain combined with agitation and a need to move.

At the end of the study, it was found that:

- Women with five to 14 episodes of RLS per month had a 26% prevalence of blood pressure

- More than 15 episodes of SPI meant 33% prevalence of hypertension;

- Women without symptoms of RLS had a 21.4% prevalence of high blood pressure. It appears that the greater the severity of the syndrome, the greater the chances of the middle-aged woman developing hypertension.

Previous studies in men have already suggested the link between Restless Legs Syndrome and hypertension. Restless legs disturbs sleep

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) has nothing to do with the mania of swinging your lower limbs while you talk, read, watch TV or work. This custom ceases as soon as the individual realizes what he is doing. SPI causes a discomfort in the legs that only passes when the person moves.

Abnormal motor agitation compromises the quality of life of the carriers because it interferes with sleep and does not allow the stay in a single position for a long time, which disrupts trips to the cinema, long trips, meetings and even dental consultations.

Agony in the legs usually appears in moments of relaxation, especially in the late afternoon, early evening or when the person lies down to sleep.

The sensation is so uncomfortable that, often, the individual needs to get up and walk back to normal.

The diagnosis is made through a clinical consultation, but additional tests should be requested to identify the causes of the problem.

According to Luciana, iron deficiency, renal failure and pregnancy are some of the special situations that can lead to the development of the syndrome. "In cases where there are no associated triggering factors, the reason seems to be a dopamine (central nervous system neurotransmitter) deficiency, and lifestyle can also influence.

The doctor explains that the treatment combines drug use with behavioral measures, such as reducing coffee and cigarette consumption, taking care of sleep quality, and exercising regularly.
