Young people entering college usually do less physical activity

Regular physical exercise seems to drop as young people enter college, according to a new study by McMaster University in Canada. The survey, based on the

Statistics Canada's National Population Health Survey , tracked 683 Canadian adolescents aged 12 to 15 who were interviewed twice a year until to complete age 24 to 27. Physical activity levels were measured based on the total energy expended during leisure activities, which includes the way home to the university. At the end of the analysis, a 24% decrease in the physical activity of adolescence (from 12 years of age) was found, until the beginning of adult life. The men showed a larger drop than the women. They showed only 1.7% drop in their physical activity levels, but were less active during high school.

Researchers also looked at other risk behaviors, such as smoking and drinking. While these habits increase during adolescence, in adulthood, in contrast, they decrease. For researchers, this is because, when they are more mature, these people can decrease health-damaging habits.

Young people tend to gain 7 pounds on average after college

At college, it is common to have what to eat in the rush between classes, barbecue with the group at the end of the week, meeting in bars and the effect of it all: extra pounds on the balance at the end of the month. Do you mean that college is fattening? At least this is indicated by the studies on obesity among college-level people conducted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in the United States. Research shows that college students gain weight by up to 7 pounds during their academic lives. Alcohol, fatty foods and unhealthy habits are the main causes of weight gain.

All undergraduate semesters have been observed. After the end of the studies, the researchers found that the weight gain is greater in the first year. According to them, the euphoria for achievement, adaptation to the new routine and anxiety about the next years at the university lead young people to develop habits such as the replacement of meals by canned and fast food, excessive alcohol intake, few hours of sleep as a function of parties and studies at dawn, in addition to sedentarism.

About 17% of the first year students completed the study period with a weight increase of three and a half pounds. Already the second year had an increase of one and a half pounds. Seniors were on average 7 pounds more than when they entered college.

There are also substantial differences between the sexes in the fattening trends. Men tend to gain more weight than women, but more gradually, while students gain more weight in the first few weeks of the semester and then maintain a balance. Men continue to gain weight and tend to stay fat after graduation.

Babies make incredible moves in the mother's belly: Check out the video

During the last months of gestation, the moms usually feel a bigger movement of the baby in the belly. All kinds of external stimuli attract their attention, and they begin to stir. From here, observing these beings so small and not yet born to be able to respond in any way to the sounds they hear and touches they feel is unbelievable.

But in addition to helping them fall asleep, this nocturnal activity helps in the brain development of children, according to a study published in the August issue of the journal Pediatrics . According to scholars it is already known that reading for children helps in the development of language, but little has been analyzed about the effect of this on the child brain.
